10 Myths about IQ

In 1905 Alfred Binet a French Psychologist made the IQ test and later in 1916 Lewis Terman an American psychologist coined the idiom “Intelligence Quotient” commonly known as IQ globally. A person with high IQ is measured to be genius; this statement goes without any argument, yet there are numerous myths associated with this.

The Myths are:

1. IQ a tool to measure intelligence:

The foremost myth regarding IQ pursued by people is that, IQ is the starting point of intelligence. Though the wisdom of a person is measured by this quantity, intelligence does not get restricted to it.

Realism: In the current scenario people are under great misconception between intelligence and IQ. When a novice is able to cope up with new surroundings quickly, then the person is judged and declared to have a high scale of intelligence. The quantity of intelligence cannot be calculated, it is a relative word. Conversely IQ is a numerical ratio that can be defined as the measure of qualified intelligence which can be determined either by set of consistent test or single test.

2. IQ is a fixed term; never changes:

The second common myth regarding IQ pursued is that humans IQ level never changes since childhood; a person with poor academics during childhood is tagged as the one with low IQ level. This perspective tends to remain the same for the rest of his/her life.

Realism: As IQ results in ratio, it gets changed as the person learns something new. Based on the research done by Susanne M. Jaeggi and Martin Buschkuehl it is determined that the fluid intelligence of a person can be developed at any point of time. Fluid intelligence is based on short term memory where a person can recall information that is taught recently.

3. IQ test is not essential for job applications:

Students think that IQ test is not required to get a job. There is a general feeling prevailed among students that IQ does not matter in a job application.

Realism:
Apart from personality, motivation, and hard work smartness gains more attention this is where IQ plays a role.

4. IQ is hereditary and it depends on genes:

This is again one of the most popular myths regarding IQ. People pursue that the IQ level exclusively depends on the hereditary of the person. People are under great delusion that the parent with low IQ is said to have child with the same level of IQ and there is also a belief that this level of IQ never changes.

Realism: It is a well-known concept that IQ of a person depends on the combination of inheritance and surroundings. There is a general belief by experts that the IQ from genes can be rated from 40-80 percent and the rest can be learned from external surroundings. Thus, the IQ of a person is not completely dependable on his/her genes; it also depends on the surroundings.

5. IQ is confined to one of the intelligence factor:

There is a common myth pursued by people that there are numerous forms of intelligence and it differs from person to person. Hence it is been proclaimed by people that IQ is always limited to particular form of intelligence.

Realism: IQ in general envelops all forms of intelligence and it is actually associated with the mental ability of a person. IQ is a measure of relative intelligence.

6. IQ can be taught:

People believe that IQ can be taught to a person to improve his/her IQ level.

Realism: It is a well known fact that practical thoughts cannot be imposed into a person’s brain. To tackle a crucial situation the timely smartness of that person is required which is called IQ.

7. IQ depends on racism and the minorities have it low:

In general this myth is widespread among most of the minorities. These people collectively have stated that IQ depends on racism.

Realism: It is a known fact that IQ does not depend on hereditary entirely and it comes from the surroundings.

8. IQ is not essential:

This is a misleading notion pursued by people. Many think that IQ is not requisite to attain success in life.

Realism: To hold the key of success apart from hard work, IQ is also required since a person’s capability can be measured only by it.

9. IQ level is more in Men:

People have a generalized feeling that a women’s IQ level is less compared to men.

Realism:
Everyone is well aware that men and women share the same level of IQ. However this fact cannot be disagreed.

10. IQ depends on hard work:

The IQ level can be improvised by gaining knowledge from the IQ based books.

Realism:
Though books support for a theoretical knowledge, practical knowledge can be gained only from surroundings. Hence success is a combination of smartness and hard work.
Hence the above evidences clearly show the oblivious of people regarding the misconception over IQ. On the other hand, despite of awareness about these myths, people promote the above IQ myths just to have a guaranteed gain.

As far as success goes, the Peter Principle applies to much of the work world. If your exec management sees you as someone who can replace them, then you’re less likely to be promoted. And entrepreneurship also depends more on one’s ability to raise capital than in any intrinsic problem solving ability.

A higher IQ person can mainly succeed in areas, protected by examinations like medical doctor, patent law, etc. Where exams determine one’s altitude, the IQ is the key determinant to success.

  • IQ is still important at any days. it’s the fact

A high IQ means you will always be able to get a job because you can learn anything and everything. A high IQ also means you will do a better job of saving and investing so that you can retire early and enjoy life. Engineering and set up machinist are two jobs that I combined and made a career in the oil field designing and machining the equpment for drilling oil wells and pumping oil and gas. Women with high IQs can succeed in male dominated industries.
