I enjoy playing and have taught 2 girls (8- 13). A TIP: To get younger children or teens interested buy a board with cool characters on it. Like Pirates of the Caribbean, Simpsons
etc. Some theme that they like. There are so many of those kind out there..look on ebay-amazon. You will see that the fun pieces on the board get the kids to learn and have fun.

There are many online resources. There are engines online that he could play against, at various skill levels. I also *highly* recommend the Chessmaster [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chessmaster] series of chess software (the latest only runs on PC, everything before it, CM9 and below, also has Mac editions). They are excellent for all levels of play and have various features and styled chessboards, from serious to fun. Tutorials galore, including pre-recorded instruction and highlights from games by Josh Waitzkin, He explains and the graphics on the board show what he's talking about, and you can stop the lesson any time, replay it, etc. Note: I am not affiliated with Mr. Waitzkin, Chessmaster or anything connected to it. I just love this software. For the serious chessgeek there's the Chessbase family of chess software [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fritz_(chess)], but that's more than a kid wants to get into, unless he's a Bobby Fischer-style prodigy. ;-)

Hope that helps.

We played the game "No Stress Chess"
http://www.amazon.com/Winning-Moves-1091-Stress-Chess/dp/B0007Q1IO4

It help our young boys ages 4and 6 understand each piece and its moves. Now, we play without the tutorial cards!!!

@Tim, I highly recommend you check out mychessblog.com material, they have some great beginner chess guides. Once your son knows the basics he can then just follow some simple strategies to get better. Thank you.

I'd like my son to learn how to play chess. I know the basics but am not very good.

What is a good technique to get a 4 year old interested in learning to play?

Thanks!
