Chess and the art of decision making

Have you ever wondered what is there in the game of chess that makes it so popular among the knowledgeable people?

History reveals that this game was first introduced in to this world more than 1400 years ago in the 6th Century AD, and spread to the entire world starting from the second half of the 15th Century. The development of technology in the form of Computers could not overthrow this ancient game, but instead embraced it whole-heartedly.

The game of chess was a true challenge for the technology and resulted in the invention of the Deep Blue Super computer. It did not stop there and now the trend is more towards the concept of Online Chess, wherein, any person, interested in learning the game and want to gain experience through practise, can use his computer and Internet connection to find partners across the world and play online chess in virtual chess rooms created by Online chess websites.

Coming back to the earlier question regarding the popularity of the game, we know that the game involves serious thinking and there is no room for luck, chance or outside influence. Secondly, there is no room for mistakes in the game, and you should rely only on your thinking capability to succeed in the game and say “checkmate” to the opponent.

Thinking means taking wise decisions which ensure that you are in the right side at all times. You are called upon to take decisions in the game at every move, as to which piece to move, which piece to attack, which piece to defend, where to place your king, so on and so forth. If you make any mistake or make a wrong move, then you are likely to be punished by the opponent and will be forced to hear the words “checkmate” from the opponent.

In real life also, we need to take decisions at every stage of life and even on a day-to-day basis. Which course to learn, what profession to choose, whom to marry, which car to buy, what to eat, what not to do, so on and so forth. If we take a wrong decision or make a wrong move, then we are likely to be punished for the same.

A cursory look at both the stages – the game and the life – reveals that there seems to be some sort of similarity between the two things – the life and the chess. And this is one major reason why the game of chess is so near to the heart of the knowledgeable people and as such, popularity for this fascinating game.

By playing the game of chess regularly and gaining expertise in the game, one can, knowingly or unknowingly, cultivate the habit of taking decisions independently. This habit of taking individual decisions, without any influence or pressure whatsoever, will definitely make that person approach the life with utmost care and take wise decisions. Not only the game of chess teaches you to take wise decisions, it also teaches you to take responsibility for the decisions you make during the course of the game. If you take a wrong decision, you should take responsibility for facing the consequences of the decision and cannot runaway from the decision.

Thus, the game of chess teaches you the skill of decision-making that not only makes you a better player but also a better person in the world.
