I think it's closer to the other way around - <a href="http://streathambrixtonchess.blogspot.com/2007/03/are-chess-players-stupid.html" rel="nofollow">the lower your IQ, the better you are at chess.</a>

Chess does improve the mind in some skills, but a person can be very good at something and still be retarded. Take for example an idiot savant which the dictionary defines as: "A mentally retarded person who exhibits genius in a highly specialized area, such as mathematics or music."

This is a very reasonable but completely baseless article. There is no research or evidence given to even remotely suggest or disprove the connection between IQ and Chess ability.

In my opinion the most powerful component of a successful chess player,
is a photographic memory. I remember watching Gary Kasparovon channel 4
& him commenting on memorising each possible move on a chess board &
the probability of each potential move. This helped him immensely in winning
so many titles & gave him an edge against the vast majority of his opponents.
More recently a chap called Richard Farleighwho appeared on the Dragons Den as a successful hedge fund manager, was a very competent chess player & stated that
he could beat more than eighty per cent of the people he played blindfolded. He was
able to do this by mapping out the most probable route of his opponent &
playing the moves, as if he could see each move his opponent made. He did'nt
know some of his competition, but very much understands the psychology of the
human being.
