Most people prefer to play with white pieces only in all the games they play, as they get the chance to make the first move and also get the initiative. This wrong notion of playing with only white pieces should be avoided and should have an indifferent attitude to both white pieces and black pieces.
Give importance for all the pieces in the board
Some players, especially in the early days, develop some sort of affinity for some of the major pieces and would like to protect that pieces. The novice, it is found, in his early games, will try to protect the Queen and would not be comfortable if his queen is lost He will try to protect that Queen and in the process might make mistakes or lose track of the position. Having predilection for any one or two pieces will lead to disaster and one should avoid doing that in all circumstances.
Putting the pieces into action
Some players will be reluctant to open up the game by bringing the major pieces into action. It does not mean that you should take an attacking posture right from the first move. Your major and minor pieces such as the Knights, the Bishops, the rooks and the queen should be put to action right from the opening stage, and the pawn movements should be restricted to the minimum. Using the pawns effectively and prudently is very essential for any player to gain mastery over the game.
Do not opt for premature attacks
Chess is also known as the War game or a battle between two kings having same set of armory at their disposal. One should not go for premature attacks on the opponent without proper planning or proper positioning of the pieces, as that would only result, in most cases, in loss of pieces and might result in weakening your position.
